Reflections
In order to complete MLO 3, I took SPAN 322, which is about the Hispanic literature and culture. This course provides a learning experience of literature that write in Spanish. However, the main objectives of this course not only encourage the students to read and analyze the content of the literature works, but also understand the Hispanic culture as well. Therefore, this course has a strong focus on the cultural connections, and as we read through the literature work and discuss about it, we will be able to make a reflection that related to the historical, political, and sociocultural context.
By taking this course, it allows the students to improve their critical reading, writing, and speaking. Sample 1, for example, the students are required to make an oral presentation by the end of the course, which is related to the course content. Through the presentation, we are summarizing the content and analyzing the theme, setting, style, and tone. And by going deeper into the story, we are interpreting and evaluating the significance behind the story and using the textual evidence to support our statements and opinions.
Literature is important when study a language, because it can provide the students an opportunity to gain access to the perspectives and knowledge of the Hispanic culture. Also, it will help the students to develop the ability of speaking and reading critically, as we are participating through the discussion and comment that create inside the class. For example, we were able to understand more about the characteristics and genres from different types of literature, as well as getting to know more about the background history that related to the author and that era, as we read through the literature works inside the class. With all the reading, we are able to share our comments to the class, which improve our skills and knowledge.
Through the study of the literature, it allows the students to develop and apply the analytical and communication skills through our academic studies. In addition, it also allows us to improve our critical reading and thinking skills, as well as enhance our analytical writing skills, as we go through the course. For example, we learned to understand the significance of the literature work, then, we try to explain the meaning in our own way and evaluate the importance of the literature work. So, as when we are reading an excerpt from a text, we are able to identify the characteristics of the genre and the historical context.
Overall, I was able to improve my language skills and knowledge and deepen understanding of the Hispanic culture.
