Reflections
To complete MLO 5, I choose Pathway 1, which I participate in a study-abroad program.
During the semester of Fall 2015, I chose to study abroad in Barcelona, Spain, for one semester. Through the study abroad program, I was able to experience different styles of education. With the education system in Spain, I was able to gain a great experience and understanding of the people, its traditions, and its culture. |
While I am studying abroad, I took SPAN 301 and SPAN 304 courses in Spain.
SPAN 301 course is about the standard, function, and culture of the Spanish language. Throughout the course, I learned about the language and the communication of the Spanish, for instance, the Spanish dialects that used in the different countries/regions, the speech that is spoken by a particular social class/group, and the way that a particular person uses the language. As the students have all the basic knowledge about the language and its culture, we then go deeper into the structure of the language, such as studying about the phonology, morphology, syntax, semantic, and pragmatic, which show in sample 1. Based on what I have learned throughout this course, I was able to use the correct way to write and speak the language. |
SPAN 304 course is about the culture and literature of the Hispanic. The course basically focuses on four different topics, which are Middle Age, Golden Age, 18th and 19th Century, and 20th and 21st Century. With each topic, the students will study about the culture, literature, and translation that related to these centuries, and we will also need to provide our own opinion based on the topic, such as historical moments, influences of literature and translation, etc. Furthermore, we will read some of the literature works that created within that period, such as fiction, poetry, lyrics, etc., and write a brief summary based on the contents. At the end of the course, each student was able to pick their own favorite literature to present to the class, which show in sample 2. Throughout the course, I was able to understand deeper about the Spanish culture and literature.
During the period of study abroad, I have gained a better understanding of the Spanish culture, in which I celebrate the Spanish holiday, go to the Spanish festival, enjoy the Spanish life styles, appreciate the Spanish meal, etc. With all the experiences that I have been through, I have earned myself a new perspective on the Spanish culture. Throughout the whole experiences, I am not only having the opportunity for practicing the Spanish language, but also have a great opportunity for learning the distinct cultural perspectives, as well as adapting to the Spanish culture.
