Experiences
Service learning is a form of social activity that provides services in order to meet the needs of the community and improve peoples’ lives. Furthermore, it is an opportunity for the individual to teach and to learn from the community.
With the service learning, I was able to volunteer myself for the community and share my knowledge to others. Through my service learning course, I learned that we should not be biased to anyone or treated someone differently, based on their race, gender, age, etc. Therefore, I choose to do my service learning at the elementary school, because I believed that children at this age begin to develop their awareness and have a strong feeling toward something that is favor or against to them, so, it is important to set a good leadership example and teach the children how to be fair and just to others, because a better community always starts with the young children.
Furthermore, I have the opportunity for practicing my language abilities through service learning, where I can use my language skills to communicate and help out others. For example, I use my language skills to help the children doing their school assignments, such as math word problems and reading log. With my language skills and enthusiasm, I was able to build a good relationship with others. In addition, I learned to be patient, so that I can help and teach the children step by step to complete the activities.
Overall, service learning not only an opportunity that allows me to apply my knowledge and skills, but also an opportunity for me to work together with others as a team.
