Reflections
I took “Translation, Literature, and Culture” course in Barcelona, Spain, which has an equivalent as SPAN 304 in CSUMB.
This course was analyzing the culture and literature of the Hispanic, which the students will be focusing and identifying the connection between the translation and the literary works and creations from the Hispanic. This course was divided into four different sections, which each section was focusing on different century, such as Middle Age, Golden Age, 18th and 19th Century, and 20th and 21st Century.
For each section, the student will study about all the different aspects of the Hispanic culture and literature, for instance, the origin of the culture, and the literature works and the role of translation in each century. As we go along through the course, we will make some comments about the Spanish translation and literature and we will write an essay that is based on the century that we are studying. For example, the students will be discussing about the historical moment of each century, analyzing the connection with other cultures from the diffusion of Spanish translation, and the cultural significance of translation. Also, the students will reflect and comment on the influences of the Spanish literature to the translations.
Throughout the course, I was able to study about the major works of Spanish literature, and learned more about the Hispanic culture and literature and its connection to other cultures, which emphasis on the different field of literary works and translations. By providing different sources of information, I was able to analyze the connection between the cultures and how the Spanish translation is diffused into these cultures.
By the end of the course, each student was able to choose their own favorite writer or any piece of work (sample 1) to present it to the class, and the purpose of doing this was to apply our knowledge and skills that we have learned throughout the semester.
